Molly Filer, LMHC

About Molly

I am a somatic therapist and trauma-informed yoga teacher, which means that our work together will go far beyond talking.

Somatic simply means “of, relating to, or affecting the body" and somatic therapy accesses the emotions, sensations, and memories that we carry in our body that we may not cognitively understand.

You could be a great fit for my practice if you are living in your head more than you’d like, or have found that talking about your problems hasn’t gotten the results you’d like. In session, I will tailor our time together to suit your needs and physical abilities; I commonly start appointments with 5 or 10 minutes of gentle yoga postures or guided meditation to help you ground and tune into your sensations and emotions before we verbally check in.

I am truly honored by the work I get to do with clients. I treat counseling as a collaborative process, and strive to create an environment of support, warmth, and humor, where you can slowly re-discover parts of yourself that have gotten lost along the way.

I am committed to doing my own ongoing work of self-discovery. To this end, I see my own counselor and engage in regular professional consultation. In my free time, I love hiking, cross-country skiing, growing a big garden, sewing clothes and attending my book club. I live in the Methow Valley with my husband and fluffy black cat, Ursula.

Specialties

Anxiety

Anxiety manifests in many ways, both physical and mental. For example: tightness in your jaw, neck, or shoulders. An upset stomach. Uncontrolled worry and looping thoughts that feel out of your control.

There is so much happening in the larger world that can contribute to anxiety - national politics, climate change, systems of oppression like the patriarchy and racism - not to mention situations in your personal life such as relationship challenges, financial stress, uncertainty about the future, etc.

I use a somatic and mindfulness-informed approach that invites you to become more familiar with your internal dialogue and reactions and I teach you concrete tools to cope with stress and anxiety.

Grief & Loss

Grief happens when you lose someone you love, and in many less obvious instances as well. You may feel grief about your life not looking like you expected it would, for any variety of reasons. You may feel grief about climate change.

I specialize in sitting with you in the midst of big feelings and helping you build skills to cope and rebuild after losses of all kinds. In my office, you don’t have to act like you’re okay or “over it” and are free to express all the facets of your grief authentically.

Trauma & EMDR

Trauma comes in many forms and it consists of anything that overwhelms your nervous system’s ability to cope.  Some examples of this are: abusive and/or unsafe relationships, having unreliable caretakers as a child, experiencing or witnessing accidents, and natural disasters.

I’m trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Densensitization and Reprocessing), a type of therapy that goes beyond talking and accesses our brain’s innate ability to heal itself after trauma has occurred.
